Sandia Heights Services does not collect the following regulated waste: e-waste, hazardous waste, or biomedical waste. However, we have provided information to help guide you in properly disposing of these materials. We encourage you to follow the proper disposal methods to protect the environment and public health.
E-WASTE
E-waste refers to discarded electrical or electronic devices that are no longer in use. This includes items like old computers, phones, televisions, printers, and other electronic appliances. E-waste can contain hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which pose environmental and health risks if not properly recycled or disposed of.
HAZARDOUS WASTE
Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) refers to products commonly found in homes that contain toxic, flammable, corrosive, or reactive substances, which can be harmful to human health or the environment if not disposed of properly. Examples of household hazardous waste include:
- Cleaning products (e.g., bleach, ammonia, drain cleaners)
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Paints and solvents
- Automotive fluids (e.g., motor oil, antifreeze)
- Batteries (e.g., rechargeable, lithium, and car batteries)
- Household chemicals (e.g., aerosols, varnishes, and adhesives)
Improper disposal of HHW, such as pouring it down the drain, throwing it in the trash, or dumping it outdoors, can lead to contamination of water supplies, harm to wildlife, and health risks to people.
Hazardous waste is not allowed for pickup by Sandia Heights Services.
BIO-MEDICAL WASTE
Biomedical waste consists of waste materials generated from healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and medical research facilities. This type of waste may include items like used syringes, bandages, surgical gloves, blood bags, and other materials contaminated with bodily fluids, chemicals, or pathogens. Biomedical waste is considered hazardous and must be disposed of in a way that prevents infection, contamination, or injury.
Bio Medical waste is not allowed for pickup by Sandia Heights Services.
PHARMACAUTICAL WASTE
Pharmaceutical waste is generated from the production, distribution, or use of pharmaceutical products. This can include expired, unused, or damaged medications, as well as containers or packaging associated with pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical waste can pose a threat to both human health and the environment if not disposed of properly. It can include:
- Expired or unused medications (e.g., prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications)
- Contaminated packaging (e.g., bottles, blister packs, syringes)
- Chemicals used in pharmaceutical manufacturing (e.g., solvents, reagents)
- Medications that are recalled for safety reasons
Due to the potential toxicity, pharmaceutical waste is often classified as hazardous and requires proper disposal methods to avoid harm to people, animals, and ecosystems.
